Mindo, a bird paradise

Budding ornithologists or curious adventurer? The Mindo region, north of equator, will intrigue all wannabe explorers with its cloud forest and exceptional biodiversity.

Set a course further north! 80 kilometres from Quito, Mindo will strike any nature lover as a true Eldorado. In the cloud forest, in which the foggy mass always linger, birds – and especially hummingbirds – are kings. The best time of day to witness their show, complete with singing and parading, is between 6 and 9 a.m. During the rest of the day, mariposarios (butterfly houses) shelter a wide array of lepidoptera. Climb on board a tarabita, a basket that will take from one valley to another. Be careful if you are subject to heights: you will find yourself in thin air, but with truly stunning panoramas! Back on the ground, follow the road to the waterfalls for a family trek, whether on foot or horseback. Young and old athletes will be able to choose their path: into the trees, in a canoe or tubing down river through a succession of round rubber rings! Set up that headlamp and walk through the forest after dark, surrounded by frogs, bats and other nocturnal mammals. Indiana Jones is nothing compared to you!
